ROBERT NIELSEN

I am a Carmel Valley California photographer, poet, writer, and painter, and have segued into full-time art-making after practicing law for many years.

Born in Australia, I emigrated with my family to the United States when I was in high school.  A graduate of Stanford University and Columbia Law School, I have also studied in Britain and in France.  I’ve lived and/or worked, practicing law and helping to lead businesses and non-profit organizations, in the United States and Canada, as well as in Europe, Asia, Latin America, and the South Pacific.

My art is nurtured by (and nourishes) my perceptions, feelings and dreams.  It is also reflects my worldwide experience and travels.

My photographs, poems, fiction, and paintings are mostly narrative in character, with elements of representation and expression.  They are often of defining moments (à la Titian or Henri Cartier-Bresson), and thus reflect and tell the stories of people and places, of times and events, circumstance and consequence.  In so doing, they reflect and tell my story; perhaps also the stories of those who view, hear or read them.  And they also reflect the fact that, to me, light, beauty, color and grace are present everywhere, in both the simplest and most complex of circumstances; needing only to be found, expressed, and shared.

My poetry has appeared in various publications; my photographs have been exhibited and published, and are included in public and private collections in the United States.
